Spendor BC1 3-way monitors Details for the BC1 model to be updated during testing There is a great deal of information about Spendor speakers and this BC1 model on the internet and at the Spendor website history section I will try to edit some comments for this description section - my own initial assessment is that they deserve their ground-breaking reputation, and look forward to further improvement by careful components or hardware updating The BC1s have now been completely restored : it is a great privilege and pleasure to listen to the BC1s Specifications : -:®:- Power rating : 15 - 55 watts -:®:- Pair matching: within 1 dB -:®:- Nominal Impedance : 8 ohms minimum 9 ohms -:®:- Drivers : woofer: Spendor BC1 mid bass 200mm Bextrene cone 26mm coil -:®:- Tweeters : Celestion HP1300 hard dome Coles 4001G supertweeter -:®:- Crossover Frequencies : 3,000Hz and 13kHz -:®:- Sensitivity : 86.8dB / 1W / 1m -:®:- Frequency response : 50 Hz to 15 kHz, ± 3dB -:®:- Dimensions [ W x D x H ]: 300 x 300 x 640mm -:®:- Weight : 14.0kg each speaker, 16kg each packed Restoration summary : Modify a test speaker by moving the crossover mounting and replacing connection wires to compare with original, then modify the other, fit correct ports and optimize the port length Feb [2/4] restoration completed : Both speakers upgraded, sand and oil cabinets finished Listening tests prior to fitting vents, crossovers moved, new cable, vents fitted and tested 28Hz resonance 1] Vent tubes missing and internal vent foam - to be replaced, modelling work done for vent length, no foam needed Vents 50mm diameter inserted - fine tuning of vent length for 28Hz - 110mm is correct length Initial results give decrease in efficiency, tighter bass, less woofer extension for same source music as original Further running-in of new crossover wires and added port reveals successful restoration - great deal of improvement so far Test cd reveals tight bass, excellent attack and damping, crisp upper frequencies - in short, monitor quality Woofer rotated 144 degrees - occasional rotation recommended to stop any sag from constant gravity pull when not active 2] Crossover to be re-positioned to minimize wire lengths, wire to be updated on all drivers, components OK Crossover secured using inductor bolt and fixing wooden block - inductors damped with non-slip matting Wire runs to each driver are now much shorter and neater All wire runs are twisted pairs like the original wiring Test speaker wired with DH Labs silver wire for tweeter and super-tweeter, Mogami wire for posts-to-crossover link and woofer wires 3] Cabinets sand and teak oil Completed 4] Speaker binding posts to be updated for larger diameter wire and banana plugs capable New binding posts fitted - takes 4mm - 5mm cable banana plugs capable Mogami wires from speaker post tags up to the crossover 5] Grilles off is preferred Repair to cloth tear - grilles attach simply using velcro strips SOLD May 2010 to Forrest Hill, North Shore City |
